Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo, and published by Nintendo. The game is set on the continent of FĂłdlan, divided between three rival nations: the Adrestian Empire, the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, and the Leicester Alliance. Players take on the role of Byleth, a former mercenary who becomes a professor at the Garreg Mach Monastery, an academy attended by students from all three nations.
The core gameplay revolves around tactical, turn-based combat on a grid-based map. Players command units with unique classes, abilities, and weapons, utilizing the terrain and strategic positioning to gain an advantage. The game introduces new combat mechanics such as battalions, which are groups of soldiers that accompany individual units and provide stat bonuses and special gambit abilities, adding another layer of tactical depth.
A significant portion of the game involves managing Byleth's life as a professor. Players choose one of the three houses—the Black Eagles, Blue Lions, or Golden Deer—each led by a future leader of their respective nation. Through teaching, mentoring, and bonding with students, players develop relationships that influence both combat effectiveness and the overarching narrative. The story is deeply intertwined with player choices, leading to multiple branching paths and alternate endings based on the chosen house and crucial decisions made throughout the campaign.
Beyond combat and academic life, the Garreg Mach Monastery serves as a hub where players can explore, engage in various activities like fishing, gardening, and quests, and deepen their bonds with students and faculty. These activities not only provide character development but also offer practical benefits, such as improving skills and recruiting new units, contributing to the game's intricate blend of strategy, role-playing, and social simulation.
